Berrett, an Ireland Under-21 international, has made only two starts and five substitute appearances for Town this season, but impressed after replacing Danny Drinkwater midway through the second half in last weekend's 1-0 win at Yeovil.
Clark told the Huddersfield Examiner: "Player competition is tough, which is how it has to be, and James is in the same position as every player - he has to prove to me he's worth a place.
"I don't do favourites. I select the side I think will give us the best chance of winning the game and I watch every player closely day in, day out.
"James certainly has the ability - that's why I gave him a new contract last season - and his attitude is excellent. Now he needs to push on and force his way into my thinking."
