Striker Pawel Abbott took advantage of two defensive mistakes to score a goal in each half as Huddersfield brushed aside Walsall's youngsters at the Galpharn Stadium.

Abbott bagged his first by steering in the rebound on 29 minutes when The Saddlers keeper Mark Baston failed to hold Chris Brandon's 20-yard drive.

After the break Abbott grabbed his second when racing on to Andy Holdsworth's pass when the Walsall backline pushed up looking for offside.

The linesman'd flag stayed down leaving Abbott to round Mark Paston and slot home with ease.

Earlier, Junior Mendes scored his first league goal for Huddersfield by tapping in a loose ball into an unguarded net when Paston and Walsall defender Julian Bennett both dithered over a long punt forward.

Walsall were given some hope when Town defender Nathan Clarke's spectacular diving header beat keeper Ian Gray at his near post on 72 minutes.

It is the third league game were Town have conceded an own goal following David Mirfin's efforts against Barnsley and Bristol City.

The visitors piled on the pressure in the closing stages and may of snatched a point but for Ian Gray twice stopping 18-year-old five-goal topscorer Matt Fryatt with his legs.

Struggling Walsall, who now have only one win from their last seven games, face a tricky encounter at Colchester next week. And they will need to take their chances if they are to get anything from it.

Fryatt had several other chances but could not take any of them. He was put clear down the left on 39 minutes but his shot from a tight angle was parried by Gray.

And on 54 minutes Fryatt beat Town's offside trap but fired wide.

Player-coach Paul Merson also blasted a 25-yard free-kick high and wide.
