Promotion chasing Huddersfield Town were halted in their charge for the Championship as a stubborn performance by Port Vale resulted in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Vale Park
Huddersfield almost struck with only seconds on the clock when Gary Taylor-Fletcher's touch inside to Mark Hudson allowed the midfielder a run at goal but his shot dragged wide of Mark Goodlad's left post.
Vale came alive 13 minutes into the first half with Michael Cummins first heading wide off a Craig James cross and Leon Constantine following a minute later, forcing an excellent save from Phil Senior.
As the rain began to grease the Vale Park turf, the home side had another look at goal when Mark McGregor's cross found Jeff Smith lurking in the centre, but his header was easily collected by Senior.
Town's search for an opener before the break almost came good when Taylor-Fletcher was again the target after he found space six yards from goal but his shot was poor, failing to test the goalkeeper.
Smith caused problems for the visiting goalkeeper again seven minutes after the restart when his wicked in swinging corner forced Senior to tip the ball over his own crossbar
The Valiants continued to pressure and were desperately unlucky not to get the goal they deserved when Senior made a superb point-blank save from a Constantine shot.
However, it wasn't much longer before the deadlock was broken when on the hour, another Smith corner found Cummins arriving at the back post who confidently powered his header past the helpless goalkeeper.
The game was far from over though when a foul 30 yards out allowed Hudson to strike a thunderous free kick which forced Goodlad to fly to the rescue, parrying the ball away from his bottom left corner.
A late equaliser arrived nine minutes from time when Danny Adams' cross was flicked on to supply Andy Booth with a simple header to give his side a share of the points.
