Teenage defender Nathan Clarke completed a gutsy display by Huddersfield to head a vital winner against play-off rivals Torquay.
Clarke, 19, had only to nod the ball over the line after Andy Booth headed a Tony Carss free kick back across the face of goal.
Veteran striker Booth used all his experience and know-how to keep Torquay's defence busy in his first match after a six-week injury layoff.
But it was Huddersfield's defence, and central defenders Clarke, Steve Yates and Efe Sodje in particular, which took the honours.
They shut down Torquay's free scoring attack and provided the springboard for a fourth successive away victory.
Torquay hit the post twice, through Jo Kuffour in the first half and Jason Fowler in the second.
They also had two goals disallowed, the second in controversial circumstances. Carss was sent off for his second bookable offence in the 84th minute, and two minutes later Torquay thought they had equalised.
Skipper Craig Taylor headed home Alex Russell's long cross, but referee Iain Williamson cancelled out the goal for a foul, which Torquay protested vehemently.
Torquay boss Leroy Rosenior said: "Sometimes you just don't get what you deserve. Some people might think the referee had a good game, but I thought he got a couple of key decisions wrong and they decided the match.
"We couldn't see what was wrong with Craig Taylor's header. It's a setback, but that's all it is because I was delighted with our performance." Huddersfield manager Peter Jackson said: "It was an excellent result, particularly after the disappointing defeat at home to Darlington last week.
"I told the lads at half time that if we kept a clean sheet we would win. Torquay are not in this position for nothing. They are a very good team indeed, but we defended very well.
"It wasn't one of our best performances, but we showed lots of passion and determination."
